Studio Visit: Maia Del Estal
'maia del Estal is a deeply thoughtful and poetic painter. A former artist-in-residence during the RRASP residency Program, her work continues to evolve through quiet experimentation, tactile materiality, and a reverence for the subtleties of observation.
Del Estal creates paintings that hover between dream and memory-delicate marks, soft textures, and offbeat compositions that suggest something just out of reach. Her canvases feel like intimate notations of emotional states, where time is slowed, and attention is sharpened.
With a background in both painting and sound, Del Estal brings a synesthetic sensitivity to her work, layering moments of quiet dissonance with painterly clarity. Her restrained palette and use of negative space invite the viewer into a contemplative pause-reminding us that painting doesn't always shout to be heard.'

Live Performance with Bunt Agency

This collaborative performance, with Bunt Agency, took place inside a Brooklyn warehouse. Two models dressed in white outfits designed by Ciara Fitzgerald — their bodies becoming living canvases as I painted them in real time. The girls stood almost still, slowly reaching toward each other while I moved between them, playing a role of ‘destiny.’ Over 15 minutes, I painted them as they inched closer, until finally, they touched hands. The metaphor of the performance was: 'You find love when you are ready to receive it.'
It was sort of dramatic, erotic, feminine and intimate. The hand-painted outfits were sold after to raise funds to support Trans Lifeline.

HOW TO FUCK A DEMON
'How to fuck a demon' 19:24 min video part of "Drink me" group show at Spielzeug Gallery.
03.08.25 - 04.03.25
How to Fuck a Demon is a 20-minute video sound performance piece that operates as a ritual and an exorcism—an intimate confrontation with one's own darkness, sexuality, and psychological depths. Written, performed, recorded, and produced entirely by me, the work synthesizes poetry, sound, and video to explore the limit between destruction and transcendence, pleasure and pain, desire and fear.
The piece embraces the demonic not as an external entity but as a facet of the self—the shadows we are conditioned to repress, the desires we are taught to fear. Rather than exiling these forces, How to Fuck a Demon suggests a radical embodiment, a submission not in weakness but in the strength within resilience. To overcome the demon, one must merge with it. Through a visceral and eroticized offering of the body, i put myself as a sacrifice to evoke it. the work stages an intimate confrontation with trauma, mental health, and the erotic as channel for transformation.
Poetry serves as the film’s psychic thread—spoken-word passages weave abstraction and raw emotion, disrupting narrative structure in favor of sensation, ambiguity, and affect. Language becomes a spell, a repetition an incantation that destabilizes the boundaries between self and other, between real and surreal. The soundscape—composed of layered vocals, ambient distortions, and fragmented noises and loops—intensifies this liminal space, evoking both desire and dread.
This is a work about exorcism through pleasure, about surrendering to the abyss and emerging altered. It is about the erotic as a site of both destruction and rebirth, where pain and lust converge into something unapologetic and sacred.

"MAIA DEL ESTAL'S ONGOING BOOK SERIES
"OPEN WIDE" REBINDS HIGHLY CONFRONTATIONAL AND CONFESSIONAL POEMS AND SKETCHES INTO BOOKS TRADITIONALLY ALIGNED WITH CONSERVATIVE, MISOGYNISTIC FIGURES/INSTITUTIONS. RAGE, LUST, LOVE, ANGUISH, AND COMPROMISED CORPOREALITY TAKE CENTER STAGE IN THESE HIGHLY INTUITIVE SCORES WHICH LEAD THE VIEWER ON A JOURNEY THROUGH DEL ESTAL'S PSYCHE"
-Evan Karas
"Maia Del Estal's Open Wide series also engages with the suggestive. They are annotated books, a 1995 Pablo Picasso monograph, America the Beautiful in the World of Robert F Kennedy, a Phillips Evening Sale catalog on which pages the artist has painted nudes and written messages like: "open your legs like a butterfly" and "Ephemeral but Permanent" putting the hand of a woman in a history that has objectified the female body."

Timelapse writing, drawing, surrounded by my books i’ve been making for the last year and a half. It started after a series of live model sessions. I had piles of drawings, and typed poems so I began stitching them into old art books —ripping them apart,, re-contextualizing them, re-signifying them, re-binding them with my own work—
The result became something like a journal, but messier— part confession, part ritual. Each one feels like an intimate object, a place where everything is together: body, text, memory, voice.

'My Skin Care Routine' (2025)
My Skin Care Routine is a short VHS video where I sit in front of the camera and cover my face with clear tape. It begins as a parody of beauty tutorials and influencer culture. The work is both a joke and a critique: about the obsession with skin care, the pressure to look young forever, the rise of cosmetic surgery, and the advertising and propaganda we’re fed every day. It exaggerates how consumer culture traps women in impossible standards of beauty and femininity and how this turns us insane.

Made a video with this poem I wrote in Spanish last summer. 'I'm scary'
Translated it would be something like:
I'm scary
Like a a rabid mouth full of saliva.
Like a knife pointed at your throat.
Sharp
I'm like that
Sharp.
Like broken glass on the floor.
Unpredictable.
Like panties full of blood.
Like the scream of a dog run over on the streets.
I'm like that,
I'm strong.
Strong like a whisky shot in the morning.
Like a lonely feline.
Like the root that breaks the tile of your house.
I'm liker that
Tsunami & Storm.
Always a lil bit thirsty.
But I'm also soft.
Soft
Soft like my lil silky black dress.
Like my freshly waxed ass.
Like the belly of a cat lying in the sun.

Like Pluto that reaches the death to bloom in the bottom.
I need to give you myself as an offer. as a sacrifice. as a self-exorcism to building a space of a ritual. of transmutation. of pain. of creation and darkness.
As an image created from a damage innocence, or a poetic reflexion of a condition, maybe as a form of awareness, or to create beauty with my agony?
Poetry can be all bullshit or not.
How close to poetry are you today?
Get closer to the culmination. The essence.
OR AN EMOTION THAT IS A SOUND.
An understanding??

kills her

kills You.

This pictures are about reclaiming power that has been taken. About eroticism as something deeper than sex — as resistance and as a life source.
To stop being consumed and start being heard.
as women we ARE always in this dichotomy between a goddess or a whore.

Maia del Estal, 'Your trash, my body' captured by Selva Bouhet (2015)
Your Trash, My Body is a photographic series that explores the intersection of femininity and disposability.
Shot on 35mm film, the work juxtaposes portraits of my body with images of discarded materials. These fragmented landscapes become a metaphor for the ways women’s bodies are consumed, used for momentary pleasure, then abandoned.
the female body is often reduced to function—desired-consumed then discarded when it no longer serves.
These images act as a visual REGISTRY, a documentation of the forgotten. They function as 'studies' of the objects, How does it feel to inhabit the space of the discarded? To be seen as something no longer useful?
These studies questions value, visibility, and survival.
What happens when the body is no longer of service?

When I was 15 years old I started photographing myself and working with performance. Without fully understanding where I was going with it -
I always said: “You can’t make a good painting if your pussy isn’t wet."
That was the energy I was after — wet, embodied, mine, young, sexual, rebellious, and free.

I'm trying to fuck up your fantasy
